Munster Senior Open 2004

The opening Grand Prix Tournament of the Irish Squash Calendar

Cork, October 1, 2and 3, 2004

The cream of Irish squash played in Cork where Liam Kenny, Derek Ryan and Patrick Foster finished top of the men while Eleanor Lapthorne took the Ladies 'A'.

Tournament Director Laurence O'Donovan provided the following press release at the conclusion of the event:

KENNY SHOWS THE WAY !
[Pace of play from No. 1 seed proves too much for Ryan]

As expected, no. 1 seed, Liam Kenny was victorious in the Men’s “A” section final of the 2004 Munster Open squash championships, with a comprehensive 3-0 victory over fellow Irish international, Derek Ryan at Silversprings on Sunday afternoon.
Kenny, who is on the world circuit and is expected to have risen to the mid-50’s when the latest world rankings are released shortly kept up the pace of the game from the outset, maintaining constant pressure on 8-time national champion, Ryan. Following a 9 points to 4 victory in the first game, Ryan was unlucky to go down 9-6 in a highly paced second game. However, the exertions of this showed and Kenny never struggled in closing off the third game 9-0 in just over five minutes for a well deserved victory.

In the men’s “B” section, David Cassidy staked a strong claim for inclusion in the “A” sections of upcoming tournaments with an impressive 3-0 victory over fellow Dubliner, Gerry Callanan.

With a reduced Ladies “A” section (due to the uavailability of the Irish team members, on duty in Amsterdam at the world championships), top munster lady, Eleanor Lapthorne played in the men’s “B” section and had an exciting 3 games to 2 victory over Waterford’s David Knox in the plate final.
The match of the day unexpectedly came in the men’s “C” section decider where pre-match favourite, Luke Harman of Highfield had to dig deep to see off the stiff challenge posed by Martin O’Brien of Silversprings playing on his home court, to record a 3-2 victory. Jimmy Docherty, Charlie Sturm and John Byrne were the remaining winners of the day in the Men’s “C Plate, Men’s “D” and Men’s “D” Plate finals respectively.
