Irish Veterans' Open 2005:
Martin McDonnell of Highfield and Sunday's Well added the Irish Vets Open title to his season's haul when he beat John Young (Fitzwilliam) in the final at Fitzwilliam by a score of 3/1. This pairing had already contested both the Leinster and Munster finals this season and all 3 matches have now ended in the same score. Earlier in the Semi-finals McDonnell won a gruelling match against Ulster's David Gotto, also 3-1. Arguably this result was a victory made all the sweeter in that it reversed last season's defeat at the hands of Ireland most capped male squash player. McDonnell was very nearly joined in the final by club-mate Neill O'Sullivan who fell to Young in the closest of semi-final losses 3-2, going down 10-8 in the fifth game. Earlier O'Sullivan had beaten the number one seeded English visitor 3-0. In the Men's O50 Donal Coughlan won the plate making it quite a successful weekend in the squash courts for Munster players.

Selection Criteria for Munster Veteran Teams for Interpros 2005

  1. A three-person selection committee comprising the Vets Secretary (Eamonn O’Keeffe, Sunday’s Well), one O45 player and one O60 player will select the teams. They will consider the following in picking teams:
  2. Players must compete in at least one of the Provincial Open Vets Championships outside their own province (Irish Veterans Open will qualify) and the Senator Windows Munster Veterans Open 2004.
  3. Teams will be selected from Irish Rankings.
  4. Where a player enters a competition but fails to earn ranking points that entry will meet the requirements.
  5. A panel of 6/7 players is required for each team. In the event that numbers selected according to 1-2-3 are insufficient, the selection committee may co-opt players.
