ROONEY makes it 3-IN-A-ROW
In what is clearly the year of the treble, John Rooney secured a hat trick of Munster Open Squash titles this weekend at Silversprings, Cork, comfortably defeating younger brother Niall with a 3-0 emphatic victory in the Men's A Section of the Irish Camper Vans sponsored tournament. The Manchester based professional glided through the group matches with the greatest of ease dropping only a single game over the entire weekend, that occurrence being in Saturday's semi final to Ballymena's Steve Richardson.
The Knox brothers of Celtic Squash Club Waterford ensured that the Rooney's were not the only family act on show this weekend. Munster number 1 Kevin Knox finished sixth in the Mens A, the highest Munster placing and one position above older brother Brian. Meanwhile David Knox justified his first place seeding in the Mens B, defeating Geoff Power of Limerick 3-2 in a thrilling B final, further enhancing the reputations of the three Deise men.

The C and D sections of the Men's Senior Open were played at Sundays Well, with Highfield's Ivan O'Mahony defeating Old Belvedere's Glen McGahern 3-0 in the C final. In boxing parlance O'Mahony got “caught cold“ in the first round of this event last year, however a subsequent season of impressive results in Munster Squash leagues were clearly reflected in this scoreline.
Meanwhile Trevor Slattery of Kilworth battled to victory in the Mens D final, defeating Silversprings Mark Wall 3-0. Slattery, having shed 5 stone in the previous 7 months threw what weight he had left into the battle with opponent Wall and demonstrated yet again his ruthless approach to 2008.
The PAR scoring system was introduced to this year's Munster tournament at
all grades, and proved to be a success with noticeably shorter game times. The
new scoring system will be reviewed at the end of this season and may be permanently
adopted at the start of next season.
