The Munster Senior Closed Championship 2012:
John Hurley and Eleanor Lapthorne regained their titles in the Munster Senior Closed Championship at Highfield today.
Reigning champion Kevin Knox was going for a three-in-a-row and got off to the perfect start taking the first game. However, Hurley played tight and steady squash and, uncharacteristically, it was the champion who made the mistakes allowing the seasoned Hurley to capitalise and go on to win 3-1. This was, amazingly, Hurley's 7th title stretching back to 2001 when he won his first against Anthony Lyons.
In the Ladies A Eleanor Lapthorne completed her come-back with a 3-1 win over Clare Jones. Future champion Sinéad Walsh was third.
Interestingly these two finals were a repeat of the finals of 2008 where the same four players contested with the same results.
In the Men's B, 'dark horse' Scott Calder must have thought he had victory when serving match ball in the fourth only to see the wily Masters' Champion, Martin McDonnell take the game and go on to wn the match 3-2.
In the Ladies B, Anne Cogan proved too strong for the rest and won the section without dropping a game. Marian Slattery finished in runner-up spot while Katie Bolton was third.
All of the results can be accessed below. Many thanks to Munster Captain, Kevin Knox, who combined the responsibilities of tournament director and defending champion - not an easy job!
