Fixture Report, 05/Oct/2017,
Thurles Squash Club at Home against Ennis Squash Club, Divison 3.

Ennis CBS opened their Munster Squash League account with a testing trip to Thurles last Thursday.

Making his Munster debut in the number five match was Crusheen’s Paddy Vaughan facing Liam Maher.  Vaughan played exceptionally well, with disguised ‘boasts’ a key feature of his armoury.  Taking the first game, Vaughan varied his tactics with intermittent lobs to maintain control of the ‘T’ and he ran out a comfortable 3-0 winner.

Oisin Casey was at number four for the CBS against Noel Walsh. Casey started very well with tremendous depth to the back corners and he edged the first game. The established pattern of long, punishing rallies continued for the rest of the match, with very little difference on the scoreboard. However, the Thurles man just managed to be a sliver ahead at the end of each game and he took a 3-1 win.

Also making his CBS debut at number three was Colm Forde versus Martin Gleeson.  Forde’s patient squash, probing down the walls against a determined opponent, managed to present the occasional drop-shot opportunity to take the first game. The match was very tight, with Forde under severe pressure at times, but his fitness gave him a slight edge for a 3-0 win.

His brother, David, was at number two up against David Broderick. The most salient feature of this match was the exceptional reflexes of Broderick, enabling him to kill off rallies with some great volleys. Forde kept a determined challenge going, with a tactical focus on moving his opponent around the court, but the Thurles man was adept at volleying early and he took the win.

The number one match was Mike Conlon v Darragh O’Donnell. This proved to be the closest contest of them all, with the players locked together at 2-2 and Conlon edging ahead late on before the Thurles player came with a superb finish to win 15-13. In the end, this match secured the bonus points for Thurles but Ennis CBS have a very creditable 9 points to Thurles’ 12.
