Fixture Report, 11/Oct/2017,
Glenville Squash Club at Home against Thurles Squash Club, Divison 6.

Division 6 Thurles travelled to Glenville Co Cork,

greeted by a cheery and welcoming Martin Purcell. Once the Thurles team got acclimatised to the cold and lack of heating, they wasted no time in putting their mark on Glenville soil. When asked about the rumour that KEPAC were using the courts in Glenville as an icebox storage unit in summer months it was emphatically denied by Glenville.

First up was Bindy Hogan who on first acquaintance seemed to have a somewhat quiet and reserved nature so unlike your stereotypical Aussie v Pat O’Connor at number 3. Both players played exceptionally well setting the tempo for the night. Bindy took the first match, then Pat came back fight like a bat out of hell. Bindy fought and took the third. Pat took the close fourth. Tensions were high, the audience hushed to silence. Bindy was down 7-4 but her Aussie tenacity kicked in to win the match  3-2. The ball was hit so hard in this game that Glenville Squash Club have commissioned the services of a competent structural engineer to examine the integrity of the front wall.

Next up new member to Thurles Marguerite O’Dwyer played Marie McDermott who in the recent past represented our county with pride and distinction in another sporting sphere. Indeed the highlight of the night for Glenville was the attitude Marie displayed in her first competitive Squash match. It was inspirational. No doubt there are better days ahead for Marie. Albeit pre-game nerves were rife with these two newbies to the sport, Marguerite overcame hers sooner and ran away with a 3-0 win.
—–
Thurles & Munster Ladies’ Captain Suzy Connors took on the mighty Dennis O’Leary. Both heavy handed players favouring boast shots. Win for Suzy 3-0. Now it must be acknowledged that Suzie is no stranger to Glenville Squash Club and her victory over Glenville’s No1 Denny O’Leary must be seen in that context. Twas like a home game for Suzie.
—–
Another newbie to Thurles Philip Wheatley had a challenging game against Niall Gowan It was almost like these two were playing in front of a mirror. Philip gave it his all, but the tireless dairy farmer/handball player with his love of cross court shots and boasts was only interested in leaving the court with a 3-1 win.
——
Lady member Andrea Fewer got to meet with comeback kid Jerry Cronin who took a break for the last decade and Glenville are over the moon about his return to the club. As the rust began to shed away he played some superb shots against Andrea who was determined to take yet another win home for a Thurles . Winning 3-0.

The courts may be cold in Glenville however the warm reception these lads give their guests makes up for it.

Even though Glenville lost this match it was acknowledged that the sandwiches supplied by Kades Kounty Glenville were of such quality that they were recognised as the best ever seen in Munster Squash. Martin was asked for a comment after the match and whilst wishing Thurles best wishes and safe passage out of Cork said that the next team to visit Glenville would be hammered. When told that the next game was against Sundays Well B (in Div 5) he staggered back a few paces and was heard to say ‘ Aaah Holy Mother of God!”.
