Sunday’s Well Open – Roundup of the event

The second Sunday’s Well squash open took place from December 10 -12th last.
The tournament consisted of grades A,B,C & D  with 8 competitors taking part in each.

The action began on Thursday night & finished with the finals on Saturday evening.
There was a vast array of youth & experience on display from the youngest player in Sophie O’Rourke to some of the more seasoned veterans on the local squash scene!

The D section was won by Ger Hogan from Highfield beating his club mate Mark Power 3-2 in a very good final.
Tim O’Callaghan also from Highfield finished in 3rd place.

The C final was won by Maciej Truchan from the Gleneagle club in Killarney beating James McSweeney of Silversprings in a tough encounter.
Mike Mulhall from the home club finished in 3rd place with an excellent 13-11 in the fifth set victory over old rival Donal Coughlan.

The B section final was contested by two Sundays well players Mike Howard & James Doherty, both players had good wins earlier that day over John Dineen & Ken McCarthy respectively to reach the decider. Mike ran out eventual winner of this section after some great squash by both players in the final.
John Dineen from Highfield finished in 3rd place with a fine 3-2 victory over Ken McCarthy.

In the A section Brian Healy got the better of Ross McNamara in the first semi-final on a 3-2 scoreline.
The other semi was played out between John Hurley & Martin J. McDonnell with John coming out on top.

The final was a very long tough encounter, Brian took a commanding 10-6 lead in the first, however John recovered to take the set 13-11. To his credit Brian bounced back immediately to take the second set convincingly on an 11-5 scoreline. The final two sets were very close with nothing between both players.
In the end John ran out the eventual winner in what was a very enjoyable final to watch.

Ross McNamara finished in 3rd place with a 14-12 in the fifth set victory over Martin J. McDonnell.

The tournament organisers would like to thank Eddie Murphy for filling in the A section to complete the draw at very short notice due to a late withdrawal.

The inaugural Sunday’s Well Open was last season, and this season this tournament was again a great success.
The tournament fitted in very nicely to the squash calendar, and hopefully it will continue to grow support over the coming seasons.

Special thanks to the Sunday’s Well club for making their facilities available over the weekend.
The courts were immaculate after their recent refurbishments earlier this season, and were a joy to play on, and are a credit to the club.

Also thanks to Mike for looking after us in the bar and laying on some tasty food for the players.
An excellent night was had by all in the club bar to finish off the event on Saturday evening.

Finally, last but not least, thanks to the sponsors, the Kilkenny Group, for supporting the tournament again this season.
